Palmanova is considered to be one of the most relevant touristic areas of the island. It is to be found at a distance of fourteen kilometres from the capital city Palma and offers an important variety in restaurants and places to spend leisure time. The Paseo Marítimo, next to its beach, is an invitation for relaxation and for going on walks amongst groves, green zones and boulevards. The beach, for its quality and services offered, was awarded the Q of quality, and it is the only beach of all the Balearic coast with this distinction. It is part of the promenade of Calviá, known as the 'Pulmón verde' or green lung of the municipality.
The 14th of September of the year 1229, only days after the landing of the King Jaime I in Mallorca amidst scenes of grieving, the noblemen the 'Montcada', were buried, they were descended from the Bearn dynasty (an antique French province situated at the foot of the Pyrenees). The burial took place at 'Sierra de Bendinat', next to a pine which was conserved until 1914 and which was popularly known as The pine of the Moncadac. A group of Catalan poets and some from the south of France, built next to the pine a monument with a base of stones from Santanyí, with a large cross of the Gothic style and in the centre the Catalan bars. On one face of the base there is the shield of arms of the Montcada and on another are the commemorative dates. The monument is situated within the framework of the Paseo Calviá.
For the playing of this noble sport, the municipality of Calvià has five excellent installations: Golf Santa Ponsa I, Golf Santa Ponsa II, Golf Santa Ponsa III, Real Golf de Bendinat and Club de Golf de Poniente.
Within the borders of the municipality of Calvià five marine sports clubs can be found: Portals Nous , PortalsVells, Palmanova, Puerto Portals and Port Adriano. All of them having impressive installations and high quality services for all the aquatic sports.
The beach and the Paseo Marítimo, which runs alongside of it, are the centre and the main attraction of Palmanova, where the majority of the hotels, apartments and villas are to be found. Palmanova is an excellent place for tourism and where it is possible to live in peace and with all the possible guarantees of tranquillity. Magalluf, one of the havens for nightlife in Mallorca, is at a very short distance and, as an alternative for leisure, the same can be said for the capital, Palma de Mallorca.
